Designing a Signature Arrival Experience for a Boutique Hotel Group

A composite example of how a boutique hospitality group used a custom signature scent across lobbies and public spaces to reinforce brand identity and elevate the guest arrival experience.

The following is an illustrative, composite scenario based on patterns we commonly see across hospitality clients. It is not a specific named client engagement.

The Challenge

A boutique hotel group with properties in several markets had invested heavily in a consistent visual identity—custom furnishings, art, and lighting—but guests experienced that identity differently from property to property. Lobbies smelled like whatever cleaning products housekeeping happened to use that week, and nothing about the arrival moment reinforced the brand the way the design did.

The Approach

Aroma Impressions developed a custom signature fragrance for the group, built around notes that matched the brand's design language—warm, understated, and distinct from typical hotel-lobby scents. The fragrance was deployed via HVAC-integrated diffusion in lobbies and elevator landings, with a lighter variant for guest corridors so the experience felt cohesive without becoming overpowering in enclosed spaces. Delivery and tuning were sequenced property by property so each general manager could confirm the concentration felt right for their specific lobby before the rollout moved to the next location.

The Outcome

Guests and staff began to associate the scent with the brand itself, with several properties reporting that the fragrance came up unprompted in guest feedback and reviews. Because the same signature scent traveled with the brand across markets, the group gained a sensory through-line that reinforced brand recognition in a way visual design alone couldn't achieve.

This kind of rollout shows how a signature scent, treated as seriously as any other brand asset, can turn a hotel arrival into a recognizable, repeatable brand moment.
