Case Studies show that Scent helps Senior Care

Ambient scent has been shown to have positive effects in a variety of industries. However, its impact in senior care is particularly noteworthy, as older adults may have a heightened sense of smell and a strong emotional connection to certain scents. In this article, we explore several case studies that have been conducted on the use of scent marketing in senior care facilities.

One study conducted by the Sense of Smell Institute found that the use of lavender scent in the common areas of a senior care facility led to a significant reduction in patient agitation (especially Sundowning) and an increase in positive mood and social interaction. The results showed that the residents experienced a marked decrease in agitated behavior, such as yelling and hitting, and an increase in calm, social interaction with staff and other residents.

Another study, conducted at a senior living facility in Canada, found that the use of citrus scents had a positive effect on physical and cognitive function. In this study, residents experienced the scent of lemon or orange while participating in memory and physical activity tasks. The results showed that these residents performed significantly better on the tasks compared to a control group where the same scents were not diffused.

In addition to these studies, there have been several anecdotal reports of the positive effects of ambient scent in senior care facilities. For example, caregivers at a nursing home in the United States reported that the use of peppermint scent during mealtimes stimulated appetite. Other caregivers have reported that the use of comforting scents, such as vanilla or chamomile, has helped to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation in residents with dementia.

Overall, the case studies and anecdotal reports indicate that using scent in senior care facilities provides a range of positive effects. The available evidence suggests that scent is a valuable tool for improving the quality of life for seniors in care facilities.
